V. Human Rights Abuses of Street Children

Indeed, the CRC requires the state to provide special protection and assistance to children who are temporarily or permanently deprived of their family environment.93 Nevertheless, our research suggests that the round ups of children in Hanoi often are primarily carried out to make them less visible—particularly to visitors to Vietnam—rather than to further their best interests. The combination of the questionable authority on which police detain these children, the purposes for which they are detained, and the absence of any judicial process or oversight for their detention renders the detention of these children following massive sweeps arbitrary and unlawful under international law.

Most children interviewed by Human Rights Watch said they were picked up from public places—parks, restaurants, tea houses, and streets—by between two and four regular police officers or members of Canh Sat 113 (an emergency mobile police force), sometimes together with brown- or green-uniformed government security guards (bao ve),who patrol the lake areas and other tourist spots.94

In some cases, many children are rounded up at the same time and put into police vans, which are often stationed across the street from Hoan Kiem Lake.

Are Canada's athletes receiving enough funding?

Who are you to deny these amateur athletes whose talents are in being able to cross country ski incredibly well, or ride a sled down a bobsleigh run faster than everyone else in the world, an income. What makes your dead-end job worth an annual salary while these people who pour 100 times the effort into their chosen sport get nothing? If you're posting on here you obviously have an interest in sport and want to see Canada do well on the international stage. Please leave out comments on how we shouldn't be spending money on athletes when Africa is going hungry, because that is not the issue here. Support our amateur athletes because they aren't the Toronto Maple Leafs, who get paid in the millions and can't perform. Support our athletes like Devon Kershaw who has been supported by his parents as well as having a job and receiving limited government carding to cross country ski as the best male in the country.

Hillary wafts in like a blast from the past

Hillary Rodham Clinton's visit to Robstown Wednesday illustrated what many people find troubling about her campaign.

Some Clinton critics, even Democrats, have feared she would carry on "politics as usual" in Washington, D.C., describing her as such a consummate politician that she has little credibility when talking about bringing change to our government.

Wednesday's rally felt like old South Texas politics, complete with homage to some politicians who haven't held office for years and vintage music. While her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, is immortalized in "YouTube" videos created by current musicians such as Will.i.am (yes, that's his name) of the Black Eyed Peas, Robstown's Clinton audience took a trip down memory lane with a variation of the 1960s "Twist" and Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" from 1980.

Kind pledges support to Obama

Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, pledged his superdelegate vote to Barack Obama on Wednesday after 57 percent of Democratic voters in his congressional district went for the Illinois senator in Tuesday's presidential primary."Sen. Obama's message of change and unity resonated with voters in Wisconsin as it has with voters across the country," Kind said. "My constituents overwhelmingly chose Barack Obama to be their nominee, and I am proud to pledge my superdelegate vote to him as well."
Kind's support widened Obama's lead over New York Sen. Hillary Clinton five to two. Because of proportional voting, three regular delegates from the 3rd Congressional District will go to Obama and three to Clinton.Superdelegates can back whoever they want, regardless of the primary vote, and could determine the party's nominee at this summer's convention if neither candidate has enough delegates to lock it up before then.Wisconsin has 18 superdelegates.
