Penn State prof dies in campus pool

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- A Penn State professor has died in a campus pool.

Sixty-eight-year-old Michael Rothkopf was taking a break during a swim at McCoy Natatorium yesterday when lifeguards noticed his face had turned toward the water.

University acquatics director Tom Griffiths says staff tried to revive Mr. Rothkopf. An ambulance then took him to Mount Nittany Medical Center. He was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The county coroner says Mr. Rothkopf likely had a heart attack.

Mr. Rothkopf arrived at Penn State in the fall and was a professor of supply chain and information systems. He previously taught at Rutgers and the University of California, Berkeley.

FAU could turn away 2,000 students due to budget cuts

Florida Atlantic University could turn away 2,000 students and be forced to slash as much as $16.8 million from its budget next school year if the state's bleak financial picture doesn't improve.

Ken Jessell, vice president for financial affairs, presented what he considers a worst-case scenario to members of the Board of Trustees at a meeting Wednesday.

Florida's 11 universities are dealing with potential cuts of $92.4 million this year, and more next year, after Florida's weak economy and poor housing market resulted in less money for the state.

GNU and FSF News for February 2008

For the latest updates see the FSF upcoming events page.

This monthly news summary about the Free Software Foundation and GNU project was distilled down from FSF press releases, blogs, email lists, and website news pages. The idea is to provide a concise summary of FSF/GNU news from the past month for those who don't have the time or interest to find and read all the original news sources within that community. This is a news summary about the FSF but it is not produced by or associated with the FSF in any way.

I'm looking for a volunteer to take over writing this news summary each month. It's a minimal amount of work, taking no more than a few hours per month.

Again thanks for a great summary!, posted 25 Feb 2008 at 18:29 UTC by atai » (Journeyer) I don't think anyone can do as a good job as you...

Ringside seat

We are in a banqueting suite at Old Trafford and a punk version of Blue Moon, the theme song of both Manchester City and Ricky Hatton, is being blasted over the PA system. Half the crowd boo before remembering they are here to pay tribute to Hatton. They start to cheer. It's a typical boxing gathering. Some of the hardest men in Manchester, with their huge necks and jingle-jangle jewellery, stand up for Hatton, who is sitting next to Wayne Rooney on the top table. They look so sweet together, genuinely good friends. It's the normal running order: food, charity raffle, Ricky and the unfortunate professional comic. This time it's Jimmy Carr, and he dies an even more painful death than the last one.

I'm chatting to Hatton's mum, Carol, and I ask if she's really as hard as he makes out. She laughs.

Lessons our children learn too early

I would suggest checking our list of structure damage online for more help. You can find it here: http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2007/10/25/news/top_stories/1_12_0010_24_07.txt

In some areas, where there was never any imminent danger AND there has been power during the entire period, residents are likely to ignore the evac orders next time. Let us in NOW if our homes are undamaged and we still have power.

It lets others know that the house is evacuated, and lets the other fire/policemen know they do not have to check that house again for residents.
